Until recently, Michael Johnstone was GM Marketing & Fan Engagement at the NRL, having previously filled roles of Membership Business Lead, Marketing Manager and Club Marketing Manager in his 8 years at the NRL. Michael had been responsible for the marketing of State of Origin with 2015 Game 2 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He has also led the development of the NSW supporters (Blatchy’s Blues) section at State of Origin games which culminated in more than 30,000 supporters adorning blue wigs during the 2015 series.  Other career highlights has been leading NRL’s role in the development of a membership culture within rugby league and record finals series attendances.


Prior to the NRL, Michael was Marketing Manager at the NSW Waratahs during the 2005 and 2006 seasons.  Outside of sport he was 4 years at Kennards Hire as National Marketing Manager.  

Michael has 20 years marketing experience and is passionate about seeing immediate results from the implementation of marketing plans, which recent technology advancements have made even more possible.
