MCG State of Origin rugby league record crowd cements Melbourne as Australia’s sporting capital - 18 June 2015

The Melbourne Cricket Ground last night (17 June 2015) hosted the biggest State of Origin rugby league clash in history, A massive crowd of 91,513 packed the home of sport for the showdown, cementing Melbourne’s place as the sporting capital of Australia.The MCG attendance bettered the previous Origin record of 88,836 for game two of the 1999 series at Stadium Australia in Sydney, the year ­before it was the centrepiece of the Sydney Olympics.

State Premier Daniel Andrews said rugby's Bledisloe Cup was Victoria’s next target.

 In terms of the actual game, the NSW Blues defied the odds to defeat Queensland 26-18 to even the ­series 1-1.The thrilling decider will be held at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on July 8 - but there will be no topping last night’s spectacular.
